Slough is probably named after the ground it stands on. The earliest record of the town, written as “Slo” at the end of the twelfth century, is generally read as the Old English word for a mire, the wet, boggy land the settlement grew up around. Eight centuries on, that ground lies under concrete, tarmac and block paving, and rain that once soaked away now has a single escape route: the gullies, channel drains and interceptors built into every yard and car park in town. Why Slough’s outside drainage works so hard
A large share of Slough’s commercial floorspace exists to move goods, with warehousing and distribution units serving Heathrow freight and the London market from the M4 and M25. Premises like these are mostly hard surface: a unit can have a modest roof and a vast apron where lorries turn and trailers stand, and every square metre of it sheds rainwater into a yard gully or a linear channel. Those fittings collect whatever the surface carries. Engineers typically find gully pots packed with silt, litter, tyre debris and leaf mulch, and once the pot is full, water stops entering the pipe and starts spreading across the yard instead. The first signs appear at the lowest point of the site: standing water across a vehicle entrance, a flooded corner of the car park, a walkway that becomes a slip risk every time it rains.
Gullies, channel drains and interceptors
Our engineers empty and clean yard and car park gullies, then jet the connecting pipework at up to 4000psi so the run behind the pot is as clear as the pot itself. Linear channel drains, the grated slots that cross site entrances and roller-shutter thresholds, are lifted, cleared along their length and flushed through to the outfall.
Many yards and larger car parks also drain through a fuel or silt interceptor, a buried chamber that holds back oil and sediment so they never reach the watercourse or sewer beyond. An interceptor only protects that outfall while its chambers have capacity left, so it needs inspecting and cleaning at intervals, and we document any waste taken off site as part of the visit. One boundary point worth knowing: Thames Water operates the public network that Slough’s sites ultimately drain into, but the gullies, channels and interceptors inside your fence line are private assets, which is why a flooded yard is almost always the occupier’s or landlord’s problem to solve.
Time the work to the seasons
Surface-water drainage has a calendar. Gullies that ran freely in September choke through October and November as the trees let go, and the wettest weather tends to arrive just after. A site cleaned once the leaf fall has finished goes into winter with its full capacity available. If one gully or channel refuses to stay clear whatever the season, a CCTV survey of the run behind it will show whether silt is washing in through a defect that wants repairing rather than repeat cleaning.
