My airing cupboard cylinder in Owlsmoor is weeping. How urgent is it?
Urgent. A vented cylinder of 1970s or 80s vintage that weeps at a seam has usually been scaling and thinning for decades, and the leak accelerates rather than settles. Close the gate valve on the cold feed if it still holds, put a tray under the drip and call us; a planned replacement beats a split cylinder emptying through the landing floor.
A new fitting will not seal on my old pipework. Why not?
Your pipe is probably imperial. Copper fitted before the early 1970s was sized in inches, and three-quarter-inch pipe is fractionally wider than today’s 22mm fittings, so a standard compression joint cannot seal without an oversized olive or an imperial-to-metric adaptor. Our engineers carry both, because so much of Sandhurst was plumbed either side of the changeover.
My College Town house has no water but the neighbours are fine. What has happened?
If the street has pressure, the fault sits between the boundary and your taps. Check the internal stop tap has not been knocked shut; in a freeze, suspect any run through a garage or under a suspended floor. Otherwise the culprit is likely your own supply pipe, the homeowner’s responsibility; we can trace and repair it on one visit.
