Shut the internal stopcock, which in most Arborfield Green and Montague Park houses is near the kitchen sink or in a downstairs cupboard, then open the cold taps to drain the pipework. Keep the failed fitting and pipe end for the engineer, as a missing insert or unseated collet tells us whether neighbouring joints need checking too.
My unvented cylinder has a fault and I have lost all hot water. Why?
Unvented cylinders run at mains pressure with no cold storage tank, so a failed expansion vessel, pressure-reducing valve or immersion cuts hot water to the whole house at once. Isolate the cylinder’s cold feed and call for help; unvented cylinders are never a DIY fix and must only be worked on by suitably qualified engineers.
My house is a new-build still under warranty. Should I call the builder or an emergency plumber?
Stop the water first, whoever you call. Developer and warranty helplines are rarely staffed around the clock, so for a live leak an emergency plumber limits the damage now, and the invoice, photographs and the failed fitting itself become your evidence for a snagging or warranty claim afterwards.
